Once again, the Nzinga Group of Capoeira Angola will hold our event "Iemanjá Protects those who Protect the Sea" in Salvador, Bahia. This event begins with the religious ceremony and delivery of offerings - January 31, followed by workshops of Capoeira Angola - February 1, and the traditional Capoeira Roda - February 2, wrapping up with feijoada and samba.

For 12 years, Nzinga has been using the Iemanjá Festival to draw attention to the pollution of sea water caused by spiritual offerings. In Brazil, many people follow African spiritual traditions that honor the divinity of nature and offer gifts as a way to restore balance and practice devotion. Many of these offerings are set afloat on the ocean in celebration of the sea as one of the earth’s most powerful natural forces. Practitioners often refer to the ocean as Iemanjá and these gifts are given in honor of the life-giving energy she represents. This event is Grupo Nzinga’s way of making an offering of love to the sea while also offering protection by promoting the use of biodegradable materials and/or symbolic gifts such as prayers, songs and prayers.

For those who would cross the ocean to join us, the true gift is your presence at our special gathering. Toma Kwiza! Se você quiser me ver - bote seu navio no mar!

Ntoondele!
I LOVE NZINGA because it has consistently modeled resilience and ingenuity. This group is an invaluable addition to a network of Capoeira Angola groups. It is unique in its founding principles, the reexamination of the practice of this art through a lens of race and gender equity. This thoughtful approach enriches the tradition of self-defense and community empowerment, better preparing us for the struggles we face in a (still) unjust world. Though our progress may require great effort, it will be extraordinary, because we will build this together.

Under the leadership of Mestra Janja, Mestra, Paulinha Mestre Poloca, and Mestre Piter, Nzinga Atlanta has already begun taking great strides towards cultivating a vibrant Capoeira Angola. We will bring energy into the exploration of the broader culture that Capoeira Angola is a part of, embrace our diversity, invest in our own talent, and create powerful partnerships within the Capoeira community and beyond. As one of a number of Nzinga nuclei that have formed around the world, we are excited about the lessons learned through healthy relationships and accountability. We know that Nzinga Atlanta is poised to be a strong part of this global network and the greater Capoeira Angola community, with a strong focus on tradition, social good and fun.

On behalf of all who have shared in the excitement of the development of Nzinga Atlanta, I’d like to extend our gratitude to the leadership of Grupo Nzinga for having the faith in our efforts to build a Capoeira Angola group in Atlanta, GA. I am sure that the bridge of cultural exchange that will be created through these relationships will bring more good than I can even begin to imagine!
