The Nzinga Berimbau Orchestra aims to develop awareness of and appreciation for the berimbau as an African instrument, it’s connection with Black culture in Brazil, and the different ways it can be played as part of its ritual use in Capoeira and Samba de Roda. Created in 1999 by Grupo Nzinga, the grew out of the necessity to open up the musical universe of Capoeira and make it available to a broader audience. The rehearsals inspire students to research individual components, helping them to develop their own language and a way of understanding how to express themselves on berimbau.Today, the berimbau is symbolic of Capoeira. This musical bow was brought to Brazil by Bantu people from west Africa and was embraced by Afro-Brazilian religious communities. The Nzinga Berimbau orchestra pays homage to this instrument because of its important role on Brazilian history. It proposes an individual reflection about our African heritage, Brazilian society and daily struggles.
